Instructions on Using the Imagery Server
The Arizona Imagery Server is a map service provided by ArcGIS Server. There are three ways to access the Imagery Server:

  1. In ESRI ArcMap
    • In ArcMap, click the Add Data button and in the Add Data dialog, select "GIS Servers."
    • Select "Add ArcGIS Server."
    • In the Add ArcGIS Server dialog, the URL you will use is http://imagery.azmap.org/arcgis/services
    • Click OK to accept. This will close out the Add ArcGIS Server dialog.
    • You should now see imagery.azmap.org listed in the Add Data dialog. Double click it to expand it.
    • Select the AZ_2010_Imagery service.

  2. As an OGC Web Map Service (WMS)
  3. In a stand-alone online map viewer

  4. To access the services in your own web applications through the Arcgis Server Rest Api.

    • Use the following connection string to access NAIP 2010 Imagery as a REST web service:
      http://imagery.azmap.org/ArcGIS/rest/services/AZ_2010_Imagery/MapServer

    • Use the following connection string to access NAIP 2007 Imagery as a REST web service:
      http://imagery.azmap.org/ArcGIS/rest/services/AZ_2007_Imagery/MapServer

    • Use the following connection string to access NAIP 2005 Imagery as a REST web service:
      http://imagery.azmap.org/ArcGIS/rest/services/AZ_2005_Imagery/MapServer


    • Use the following connection string to access Arizona Features as a REST web service:
      http://imagery.azmap.org/ArcGIS/rest/services/AZ_Features/MapServer

    • Use the following connection string to access NAIP 2010 Imagery as a REST web service: http://imagery.azmap.org/ArcGIS/rest/services/AZ_2010_Imagery/MapServer


  5. To consume the 2010 4-Band imagery , follow the instructions for ESRI ArcMap above and choose AZ_2010_Imagery_4BAND.

    • Note - you will need to be running ArcMap version 9.3.1 or above in order to change band combinations.



  6. The 2010 Imagery is also available as a tiled service and is cached for faster performance. To access that service, follow the instructions for ESRI ArcMap above and choose AZ_2010_Imagery

*Imagery for 2005 does not display correctly below 1:7500 scale (it is fine at 1:7600). This is due to an ESRI bug #NIM045195 'Image Services turn red when the input raster type is set to ArcGIS Raster dataset and the input data is JP2000.'

** Imagery for 2010 appears to have thin white lines when zoomed out to the state extent. This is due to limitations of the ESRI image server software. The lines fade away as you zoom in, and the image displays correctly at 1:175,000 or below.

  • The Arizona Imagery Server project addresses the need for timely and accurate digital orthoimagery. Organizations employing GIS place a great deal of value on digital orthoimagery, as this source of imagery is useful for extracting new geospatial information from the imagery as well as providing context to existing geospatial data. Despite the utility of using digital orthoimagery in GIS, many organizations do not have the capacity to acquire and store the imagery. Imagery of this type tends to demand a substantial outlay of funding and requires a large amount of disk storage space.

    New Sources of Imagery

    The Arizona State Cartographer's Office (SCO) and USGS have focused on the development of partnerships with other government agencies in order to leverage other sources of funding to acquire this new orthoimagery. The SCO has coordinated the collection of additional funds from other governmental agencies for this purpose. Imagery has been obtained for 2005 and 2007 and there are plans underway to obtain imagery for 2009.

    The SCO is currently working with the USGS, State and other agencies to develop additional data repositories and portals. The purpose of this is to store appropriate redundant copies of the imagery for security and maintenance purposes. This may also be necessary for the efficient use of the data by participating agencies.

    Other Datasets

    Existing DOQQs, DRGs, NED shaded relief products, and other DOI, Agriculture, state and local imagery, which require storage in a RDBMS to be efficiently displayed in an Internet map server, may be added to the portal over time.

    Integration with The National Map and Geospatial One-Stop

    1. The data will meet national standards.
    2. The data may be accessed for Homeland Security purposes and by the public.
    3. The imagery, and other data, that is hosted through an agreement with USGS, may be placed into the Public Domain.
    4. Other data, available from The National Map or Geospatial One-Stop, may be used with data available on the Imagery Server.
